I just bought this bronco yesterday its a 95 with low mileage, I bought it with the problem of a intermittent thump and growling coming from the behind the seat area. My first thought was a bad wheel bearing in the rear axle so today I tore into it...everything in the rear diff looks good, it had clean oil and no metal or chunks. I pulled the axles which both sides have very little up/down play, the bearings look good not burnt and rotate freely with no catches that I can find.
Now here is what has me stumped, before tearing down the rear end I put both rear wheels off the ground put the truck in neutral and attempted to turn the wheels and boy was it tight. I actually had to use a breaker bar to turn the wheels.
Should I suspect a bad transfer case? it engages fine and disengages fine no problem could a rear output bearing cause this?
I'll give those ideas a go tommorrow, although I would be surprised if its a U joint their is no clanking when I engage reverse to drive several times. but it doesn't hurt to physically check them for binding and stiffness.
Well looks like it may be a bad universal joint at the rear axle it has a little bit of play in it plus it looks like Ford originals. I'll replace all 3 joints and post my results.
Make sure if you replace the double cardon spiders that you replace the centering ball and spring as well. These two components will come out when you pull the spiders anyway.
i would also confirm that your tcase is full of fluid. also did your rear diff have a Limited Slip? if so you need to add some friction modifier to the gear oil otherwise you will thrash that LS quickly.
