I have been motoring around in my new truck. The front end has a little noise when turning the wheel. Louder to the left but happens when I turn right too. It is a low growling kind of noise. Kind of like brake pads grinding, but happens when I am moving not braking.I am looking at the discs but not seeing anything. This truck hasn't seen any real use for the last several years. I checked the hubs, they are not hot after freeway runs. They are auto and I will swap them out soon. I was worried they might be stuck on lock but I should get some heat from them if that was true. The noise is present from low to high speeds. It doesn't get significantly worse at speed.
Am I just hearing the steering pump?
97 F350 Crew Cab 4x4 5.8 107K (Just picked it up for $3700). Runs great. Body is straight, paint is good, bare bones XL package.
have u checked the condition of the bearings in the hubs by jacking up the front and grabbing the top and bottom of the wheel and wiggleing it?
incase u are wondering how this will cause a grind.... if the hubs are wore out bad enough the whole thing will move and the rotor will grind on the inside of the caliper where it bridges overtop of the rotor.
the power steering doesnt grind it just whines a little
Could be the steering pump, but if the noise is louder when turning the wheel to one side vs. the other and you have no steering damper it could very well be the steering gear box and not the pump. Do you still hear the noise when you're turning the wheel with the truck not moving?
Bringing it home from clamming tonight the ABS light came on and started blinking.
I had it in park and it wouldn't come out (in the McD's drive thru!) when it popped out- OUCH- it was fine driving but the cruise control no longer worked. I know I have to check a fuse somewhere.
I am glad it was a good deal... don't mind putting money into it... so long as it isn' t too much.
