300 six carb

I have a question I can't quite figure out. Why can you only get a one barrel carb for a 300 inline six? At least thats what the lmc catalog states. Why also would it matter what tranny, and truck you have to get the carb. Is it just me or it doesn't. The year on the engine matters. But the engine is what your buying the carburator for not the f150 or f250. Is there a something like a vacumm line that attaches to the carburator, and thats why you have to get a specific carb? Is it posible to get a 2 or four barrel carb? On a v block such as a v8, you have a classic 4 barrel carb. Do two barrels go to each four cylinders? Thanks for any help. Im not very indepth in carbs.

I suppose because places such as LMC sell a lot of NOS[1] parts & replicas
that were designed as OEM replacements.

Because automatic transmissions have kickdown linkages attached to the
carbs that downshift the trannies upon heavy acceleration.

Depending on the application, there can be several.

Of course, check in a local speed shop, or Summit Racing and Jegs if looking
online:
Summit Racing - High Performance Car and Truck Parts l 800-230-3030
JEGS Performance Auto Parts - Accel Billet Specialties Edelbrock MSD Moroso Mr Gasket

[1]
New old stock - old parts that have been in warehouses and were never sold.

A lot of guys run a Clifford 4 barrel intake and a Holley 390 CFM carb. From what I understand, bigger is just going to overcarburate it. Once you do that, you also need to get the extra spent gasses out. You might want to look into EFI manifolds.

knew a guy who put a adapter plate on his stock intake and mounted a 2 barrel carb... i'm saving my penies for the Offenhauser DP intake, it is a performance dual plane 4 barrel intake. be sure not to put anything bigger than a 500CFM carb on your six, there is a good six cylinder section of the forum that can probably do you more good, not as many people there as here but they're cool guys

oh, did not know that. I have a kickdown on my 88' 302 with efi. I forgot these older trannies bolted to these engines would have a kickdown mechanism too.

well thats cool that you can put a 4 barrel on a 300 six. I wasn't sure. But, once you have the correct cubic feet per minute carb, put the right jets on, and the right adjustments, you'd probably end up with a good running engine.

Pontiac used to offer a 250ci straight 6 with 4bbl carb as the base engine in 67-69 Firebirds, if they can offer it stock for those motors, it cant be too difficult to obtain a 4bbl Offenhauser intake manifold and 390cfm Holley 4bbl for the 300-6.........Ought to run great!

The Pontiac one was actually an option (I had a base moder 68 with the 1 barrel 6) I am actually thinking about building one of the OHC Sprint 6's. They had 10:1 compression, 4 bbl, and various other improvements over the base. Sorry to sound like such a tool.

yeah, i used the carb selector on holley.com , and a 350 to a 500 cfm would do the trick depending on if the engine is modified or not. I think a 390 cfm with a manual choke is a great Idea. Im not much one for an electric choke. I've always likes the manual choke, so you know what is going on with the choke under the hood. But, still 2 barrel, four barrel, or even a rebuit stock one barrel? In your guy's opionions which is better on a well tuned 300 six and why? Thanks..

Do you have to deal with emissions testing?

I would go with the 4 barrel. It is tried and true with a lot of the guys on this board.

also, besides getting the right carb, how do you know a certain 2 barrel or 4 barrel will fit? Are there adapter plates or something?

You can't do much with a stock intake, you need to get a Clifford or Offenhauser 4bbl intake.

With regards to the 4 barrel, the Holley is a universal pattern, so it should bolt right up to the 4 barrel intake. I have no idea for the 2 bbl.
