i was just wondering what kind of problems will i run into if i swap a 5.0 MAF system onto my 351W SD? i have the opportunity to buy the 5.0 MAF's Air box, maf ,engine bay harness, engine harness, airtubes ,tube from oil filler to air tube. was wanting to know if it will work without issue. and this all is for a E4od tranny also.
also should add i plan on swapping on an explorer upper intake with typhoon lower and Gt40 heads. should i just get the Explorer intake hose also and use the truck air box and MAF meter and computer?
A mass air swap will give you crisper throttle response and slightly better fuel mileage. There are no power increases in doing the swap alone. You can swap intakes, heads and still run it with speed density, however, you will most likely need to run an adjustable fuel pressure regulator if you don't plan on aftermarket tuning.
I dont think i would just try running higher fuel pressure i have always thought that was a bandaid for tunning issues. Also doesnt that 5.0 computer assume its tunning 302 cubic inches? Will the adaptive feature be able to handle the exta 49ci or will it be running on the ragged edge trying to get this thing to run right.

Yes it is but it can work reasonably well in some situations.

Both motors have about the same HP potential in stock form so the EFI system will adapt quite well. But if either engine is improved to the point it moves quite a bit more air than stock it will require tuning to deliver full potential, stock like drivability and emissions. People tend to overlook things like idle quality and may never know that the motor is running rich or lean, as long as it starts all the time and has good power they don't care.

Isnt it posible that you could have lean or Rich spots in the at certain RPMs and engine loads. i see guys on the EEC tuning website fighting calibation issues of course these are mostly modified motors.
Yes absolutely, the adaptive nature of the EFI system can mask a lot of problems but in general the further the engines operating requirements are from a stock motor the worse the results.
When i had my Chip done for my SD 347 on the dyno jet it had a wide band installed that charted with the run. The biggest thing i noticed was that the Air/fuel ratio was jumping up and down and we fought that most of the time it was on the dyno. Dave showed me a carb 327 in a vette with a four barrel and it was just about a flate line all the way up to peak HP. Needless to say my tune was more like get it good enough to drive and not burn down the engine and the gas mileage blows.
