I just put a rebuilt M5ODR2 in my truck a couple months back and I'm having issues again. My truck has very low gears so I normally start in 2nd. When I'm leaving from a stop, as I release the clutch in 2nd, it is "banging" out of gear. If I start in 1st I don't have any problems shifting to 2nd and 3rd.
It does this about 1 out of 5 times and it isn't showing signs of a broken gear. It almost feels like it isn't engaging all the way but I didn't expect this to happen to a tranny with 3000 miles.
Any thoughts?
I wish I went to a ZF after my first transmission blew.
this "banging", does it feel like you are driving an auto that takes a while to go into gear then kinda lurches when it pops in? ir does it just make noise?
that tranny has no electrical control to it and mechanical problems will almost never be intermittent like you said it is...so there has to be something different you are doing that 1 time out of 5 that is causing the issue, try to isolate what that is and you stand a way better chance of finding out the issue, there could be a lot of things making a "banging" noise.
did you buy the tranny rebuilt or did you do it yourself? if you bought it you should get warranty
Ok... When I accelerate i hear a bang when the transmission drops out of 2nd into neutral. And thankfully I bought the rebuilt one with warrenty. I just need this thing to be on the road all week for work.
Now I was just driving it and it feels like 2nd gear is further back and now I cant even shift it into 2nd. Everything else is normal...
that sounds like shift forks but if you bought it rebuilt those should be new
popping out of gearis also usually related to the shifter tower and/or shift forks...it will only pop out of gear if its not completely in gear to begin with OR the part that hold it in gear (spring and ball, forgot the name though) is toast
if you bought it with warranty see if they will just give you your money back, they probably wont but if they do go buy a Zf lol
the shift tower is right on the top of the tranny...i THINK there is a removable "doghouse" cover that when removed would give you easy access to the tower, if the doghouse can be removed you will have to pull the carpet or whatever you have...only other way is pull the tranny
but if its under warranty take it back to the shop and then sue their asses for lost wages and whatever else...you do live in the U.S. lol
I got it from a parts yard and they recommended the shop that installed it. I was working 4 hours away so I didn't have time to do it myself. I should be safe.
If anything I would like to try and fix this myself. Any tips and tricks?
I just noticed another problem, 1st gear doesn't disengage as soon as it should. I have to pull it past neutral to get it into 3rd or into neutral. This is bugging me, anything I can do?
man the best thing i can tell you, that tranny being warranty is rip it out and take it back...if you start messing round in there you can kiss any warranty good bye and if you want to do that you might as well buy a rebuilt Zf 5 speed from a better shop and install it yourself and take the junk M5OD back
im willing to bet youd be much happier with the Zf any way, hat you using the truck for and what engine does it have?
Is the shifter real sloppy feeling when it's in gear? They may have cut some corners on the rebuild. If you were to tear into this without removing the tranny it would be like building a ship in a bottle. Trans has to come out.
Mine would pop out of gear and I found the transmission mount bolts were way loose. Tightened them up and didn't do it anymore. Just something else to check.
