No, it is not normal. Frequent enough a problem to be of great concern? I guess we'll find out in a few days when other people post.

I had the same thing happen to my '99 F250 Superduty. I replaced the battery 11 months ago with a OEM battery purchased from the Ford dealership. I use the truck as my DD. I went to go to work a couple days ago, and the truck would only click and not turn over! Long story short, I had a cell go bad in the battery. Dealer replaced it free of charge , and now the truck runs great again.
Years ago, I put a good quality new battery in a '72 Chevy camaro and had a cell go bad within 1 WEEK!
So yes, new batteries can go bad.

ford batteries are made in Pennsylvania, East Penn Battery, its not a NAFTA thing, its a Quality Control Issue in the plant. I doubt there is a battery manufacturer out there that doesnt have a failure rate in the 100's per 100,000 batteries off the line if not worse.

It is possible it is just the battery. Being a 2009 and without knowing i't's life on the lot and how long. If the truck was built in late 2008 or has been on the lot for quite some time the battery could have had a early demise. The battery only needs to go completely dead a few times or less to destroy a considered "new" battery.

changed the battery in my '08 allready, was barely cranking over on a 15 degree morning. put a diehard platunum in it now it cranks over like crazy in the cold weather. i used to work on gm vehicles for a living and once in a while would see a new delco battery defective, it happens once in a while. also agreed letting a automotive battery stay undercharged will ruin them, it begins the sulfation process. auto batterys like to stay fully charged.

Does anyone have a preferred battery? I have always put Interstate batteries in my cars and trucks with confidence they are one of the best.

I have seen batteries last only 6 months or last 9 years. Doesn't seem to be any particular reason. I ordered a 78 F150 and the original battery didn't last 6 months. Put in a new battery and checked the charging system thoroughly and all was well for several years.

Must be winter - battery, tire and ESOF threads are frequent. I am surprised I haven't seen a "jellied diesel fuel" thread this season.

I wouldn't sweat it. I've had car / truck / motorcycle batteries last years.. and others crap out quickly.

I just replaced my 2 yr old NAPA batteries in my F250 6.0 with a set of fresh Wal-Mart bat's. $150 for the set. 3 yr replacement. 8 yr prorated. On a diesel, if they last 3 yrs, I'll be happy.

I've got a buddy who has an '08 F-150 and his factory battery already went south. Sure sounds like some just don't want to last too long - at any rate, if you drop some money on a decent battery now you won't have to worry about them for years. I put red-top optimas in my '02 years ago and haven't looked back. I've had one die after the truck sat for a few months, slapped it on the charger and it is still going strong.

Good Luck.

bought of a set of napa premium golds for the "great white shark" in dec 08. had to get new ones under warranty this dec 15 09. full coverage so no $. they tried telling me it was the trucks fault.the first set started it, but if it sat for 2-3 weeks it struggled. the new set cranks faster at -20 than the first set did with a hot engine. kind of makes me think it was an old stock battery ot it had a slight short right from day one. checked the alt the other day 14.1v(brand new VOM) so i'm thinking its not the truck
