An old guy

Happy New year. Just turned 74 yesterday and still researching engines and tranny for my son who thinks he is too busy to do it. He has a 1964 F100 long box. NumberDumby sure has helped me several times Also some of you other guys as well. My question is are C4 & C6 transmission side shift trannys so we can use column shift. I am sure my 68 Mustang was top shift but I could be wrong. It would not be the first time. Our original plan was to use the 292Y w/ford-i-matic out of a 54 car but gave up on that one. The guys suggested a C6 with Mummert bellhousing but to expensive now wondering about a 302 w/C4. Any thoughts on this idea and what is needed. Sorry for so long a story. Joe in Ontario

I've beleive the mid seventies style c-4 & 6 where all side shift linkage, I'm currently running a 76 302 motor & If I remember a 74 C-4 in my 65 F100, with column shift. The only difference I remember is a truck leakage is up and a car leakage is down on the side of the transmission.

The shift lever is easily changed in a C4 the correct truck link. C4s were placed in trucks behind 240s and some 300s.

Thanks guys for the info. By the way what is the difference between a C4 & C6. heavier or difference in physical size. Thanks again and Happy New Year. Joe

C4 is a smaller case with a removable bell housing and the C6 is a larger case with the bell cast in and specific to engine family it is also a more heavy duty unit and uses quite a bit more horse power to get things going.
