Hello all. I don't know too much about the aftermarket ignitions. I've see several posts about the 6AL's. My question is: Does the 6AL replace the "brain" or is it added somewhere else in the system? How does it hook up? How hard is it to install? Thanks for the info guys!
A 6A OR 6AL will replace your "brain", It will hook up to your stock distributor or you can but a msd distrib. If you use your stock one; which will work great get the right msd addapter. It will make installing much easier. You might want to gap your plug out .05 that way it will run smoth. You will need the blaster coil too. I have put one in and it works great. I was a well chosen upgrade. I think it is a much better sol. that the duraspark setup.
I was about to install an msd 6 on my truck, but what is this about it replacing the "brain"? I thought it hooked in between the ignition box and the coil.
Yes, it completely replaces the (UN)Duraspark ignition. You disconnect the harness coming out of the distributer (which is stock going to the Durapoop), and using the seperate adapter, it connects to the magnetic pickup harness coming out of the MSD. Hook up the battery wires (heavy black and red), run the small red wire to the original coil wire, Connect the MSD coil wires (orange and black I do believe), make sure all wires are routed safely, and crank her up. I installed it (I run a MSD 6N(T?) box meant for the circle track use, and a Blaster high vibration coil).
I didn't regap my plugs but I should. Using stock MC plugs. Took my all of half an hour to mount. Made a big difference to my truck, probably the sign of another failing Durapoop.
Matt was right, I got the box in and it works better than the duraspark. RPM at idle came up by 200 with no other work done. Mileage picked up from 11 to 14 with I-6 300 cid, c4 and 2.75 final.
The guys are right. This is a superior spark set-up. You can basically gut you distributor when installing this setup. Another neat feature of this is the rev limiting plug ins. If you loan your truck (NEVER), you can put in a 4000 rpm chip and ensure that your motor is not abused. WAY COOL.
