I have a 460/c6 and am having trouble with the oil pressure at idle. It carrys good oil presure at speed, and at idle when out of gear, but once the engine comes up to temp, the engine will not hold oil pressure at idle while in gear. Is this a possible oil pump problem, or something more major.
Had the same problem when I got my beater. 460 with 165k on it. I replace the oil pump and the pressure gets higher at the initial start up but as you say when the engine warms up the pressure drops to the bottom of the line at idle. When on the road though the pressure still runs low but at the low end of the scale. I think this is normal as I have not had any problems so far. From what I read on this board the only way to get higher oil pressure is to put in a high cap/volume pump.I think as long as you keep the oil up to safe and full levels you should have no problems, just keep the ear glued for unusal sounds of grinding steel and knocking bearings (just kidding) Good luck....
If you could tear it down, use Plasti-guage on all the bearing surfaces, including the Cam bearings, you would see where the Oil pressure loss is. A high-V pump wont help a bit. Be sure to change the rear main seal, as it leaks because of the worn bearings (and bad winters).
Thanks for the reply. I was afraid that I may be in for an engine rebuild. I'm restoring a 74 f100 SB and was planning to drop this engine in it but hoping I could do it without a major overhaul. The engine doesn't smoke at all, so I figure that the rings are good. Do you think I could get away with bearing and crank replacement only to fix the pressure problem. I thought about having the crank re-surfaced and going to oversized bearings.
