The Original Tailgate Step

Aint it cool? Its from a brochure for 1950 Studebaker trucks. 1950! Now wouldnt it be cool if that tailgate would lock in three position, including the 'normal' tailgate down position? I'd like that so much better than the goofy thing on Fords now... If you really have to have a tailgate step, this is what you need!

Simple is better! And as usual, once again older proves to be better...

That's pretty cool. I liked flaresides when they were called stepsides because the had a step on both sides right behind the cab. And they could even be ordered a full size 8' length. Rare, but I do remember seeing a few. Usually one ton pickups used for oilfield work.

I think it would be neat if they could make the pickup tailgates open like the station wagons used to. Where it would drop down or swing to the side for easier access. I wish that they swung to the side so i could reach things better rather than having to climb over the tailgate.

You mean like this:

2010 Honda Ridgeline - Feature Details - Dual-Action Tailgate

Flame suit, where is my flame suit....

If they just made a supercab, long bed, manual trans version that got 22 mpg and was $20k, I might have looked at one....

> I might have looked at one....

I had a customer with one, he towed a dual axle U-Haul trailer loaded with his household goods to FL with a Ridgeline. Plus, we loaded his bed and interior full enough that the vehicle was squatting on the tires. Inflated to the max. on the sidewalls, it made it okay. Not a bad little truck.

Neat tail gate step, exactly how i like them. I do that for the front bumpers with a fold up on my big 4x4s and vans so I can reach everything including cleaning the snow off the wipers.

Uh...when exactly did Ford refer to their pickups as Stepsides?

Never. A Stepside is a CHEVROLET or a GMC. A Flareside is a Ford.

Ford offered the 8' Flareside bed on F100/350's thru 1979.

1957/66 F350 Stylesides could be ordered with a 9' bed.

The pic of the Steady-Breaker pickup does not show the chains used to support the tailgate, which is also what Flaresides, Chebbies, GMC's and Hodge Podge Dodge's used.

Tailgates are generally a PITA to begin with, I removed mine from the F-250 permanently and use a double door canopy on the bed. Sure makes loading big, heavy dogs that cant jump high a lot easier..............(Anybody want to buy a pristine tailgate?)

Haha I like my tailgate thank you... Solid and simple... Doesnt need much room to open... Can STAY open... Besides, how can you tailgate without a tailgate?

My preference is NO step, but I like this fold down thing alot better than whats on the Fords now...

First $575.00 vet bill on a 125lbs Black Lab that could not clear the tailgate on a F-250, and it came off permanently............Obviously though, tailgates are indispensable for a lot of folks. ...........Back in the day, the only "man step" we had was the top of the rear tires!
