My 4x4 floor shifter is not staying in, it will in 4-high to a point but pops out, but I try and put it in 4-low and the lever just snaps forward. It will drive in 4-low if I hang on to the the lever. Is there a detent that might be worn?
Thanks, Bill
Although I can't say for certain with regard to a transfer case, when I had a transmission that did the same thing, it had to come out for repair. It's been so long now that I don't remember what internals were replaced, however.
this happend to a dodge i use to have, there was a clip in the transfer case on it, or at least thats what they told me. i just sold it! have you traced it down to the transfer case from the shifter? maybe there is something obvious there, im not sure. good luck!
can you put the truck into 4x4 and then disconnect the lever at the T-case and see if it still pops out? That would eliminate or prove the lever being the cause..
if it is like my problem, it will go in and kick out ok, it just kicks out of 4wd while your driving, like it never truly locks into 4wd. just my 2 cents.
I found and fixed the problem: The bolt that holds the shifter to the side of the trany is in a nylon sleeve that is inside a bushing that is surrounded by a rubber bushing. It seems that the whole mess was corroded. The reason the shifter was springing forward was just probably lack of not being used often enough. A little grease will keep it working awhile. Maybe a good place for a grease zerk.
