Qestions about Y block.
I got back from the Navy and I wanted to start a new project. I started looking and found this 64 f100 on craigslist for $800. I started running numbers and trying to learn about the truck. The codes on the drives side door match everything about this truck except one thing, the motor. It is a long bed, 2 wheel drive, and green, assembled in the KC plaint. The thing the gets me, that plate says it is a six cylinder and I think I can count. From my readings I think I have a Y block in my truck.
How good of a thing is having the Y block?
Some background about the truck, not only did the guy drive it to meet me when I bought it, I drove it home from there. Witch it over an hour drive. So I know the motor is strong and in good shape. Another problem I'm having is my father is yelling at me to get the shifter fixed. It is a three on the tree and he is telling me I'm going to have nothing but problems with it if I don’t fix it soon.
What are the alternatives to keeping and running the three speed?
And lastly, I have been gone for a few years over seas and I have lost all my connections back at here at home. We still have the same old scrap yards here in town but as you guys know they were picked over for anything good long before I was born. I have found the LMC catalog and last night I found the Dennis Carpenter web site.
Where should I look for new parts? Online? Catalogs? Big Ford farms in the country?
Thanks for everything you guys have all ready been a huge help.
Chris.
An easy way to identify a Y-block at a glance is the 2 bolt valve covers and distributor in the rear. These characteristics are shared by the Lincoln Ys, Early Olds Rocket, and one or two others, I believe.
This is a Ford Y-Block.

The only negative to a Y-block is the cost to modify it.
They are reliable. They can be used for work. They can be used for fun. They respond to modifications very well.
Alternatives to the 3spd, a T5 5 spd.

The report above is the engine is solid. Cant get better than that. Keep it and enjoy. Spend money on something else, or save it.
