I am currently working on a '78 F150 4x4 w/351M,C6,NP203. I just got done swapping in a '82 351M in place of the old worn out '78. I can't figure out the reason why my alternator is not charging now. I've replaced the alternator, battery and tried hooking the alternator up every possible way. The alt' is good I've had it checked. The alt' will run the lights for awhile but then after a few minues on the raod the truck wants to shut off and will not re-start without a jump. Also I am a little confused on my 203, the lever says lock, low, high, lock, how does this work I am used to a 205. I undersytand that the 203 is a full time case, but I also have warn hubs so it is capable of 2 wheel drive. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Have you changed the voltage regulator? That controls the alternator.
The transfer case should go
low lock
low
nuetral
high
high lock
What it is, is that your 203 has been converted to part time if you have unlockable hubs.
In 'high' and 'low' (not lock positions) your simply in 2wd. If you lock the hubs and go into 'low lock' or 'high lock', your locking the transfer case into 4wd.
How it used to work as fulltime was that in either high or low, it was basically the same as an open rear end. It would trnasfer power to whichever end had the least traction. In 'lock' it locked the front and rear together.
HAVE YOU TIED REPLACING/ADDING THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR, I BELIEVE THE LATE MODEL ALTS HAVVE AN INTERNAL REGULATOR. THE WIRING HARNESS YOU MAY NOT BE USING MIGHT OT HAVE A SPOT FOR ONE.THE 203 HAS AN OPEN DIFF INSIDE JUST LIKE AN AXLE. WHEN THE LEVER IS IN THE "LOCK" POSITION IT LOCKS THE FRONT AXLE TO THE REAR. WHEN IT IS OUT OF THE "LOCK" POSITION IT ALTERNATES THE POWER BETWEEN THE FRONT AND REAR AXLES.ANY QUES. PLESE FEEL FREE TO E-MAIL ME BACK. GOOD LUCK!BUERKLINBUDDY@CS.COM
BigOrange, Have you checked all of your grounds? Engine to firewall, Engine to frame, etc. You may also have a pinched wire. I hope you find your problem.
