Thank you Eddie. My truck is 2WD. The only thing I can see according to the service manual besides the bellhousing is that the 3.0 shift linkage is different. I assume(The lovely magic word) I can change this over with just the pan removed.

The thing that kills me is I have no history of the truck. It has markings on the driveshaft and trans like they were removed recently. It is the bright yellow crayon stuff with the truck license plate number for identification in a shop etc. I dont know if they rebuilt the trans or made a repair because it is spotless on the outside. I just wish that I knew what it was I found in the valve body.

Junkyard Special

Hello again,
Just got home from the junkyard. I pulled an A4LD trans and convertor from a 1993 Explorer 4.0 2WD. Vehicle was exceptionally clean and had 103,000 miles on her. I chose this vehicle because it had an engine fire. I paid $158.00 with a 30 day warranty. I pulled the pan and drained the fluid very slowly and no chunks. The fluid was a little dirty but did not smell burnt. There was a reflection of a very small amount of brass dust in the bottom of the pan in the sunlight. There was a tiny bit if goop on the magnet. I thought it looked good myself. I got down to the last connection which was the modulator valve and the line was full of tranny fluid. That got me a little concerned cause the motor obviously was sucking the trans dry. I guess I will clean her up, change the modulator valve and filter, cross my fingers and hope for the best. Is there anything I should look for or at while it is out? I appreciate any and all input! Thank you!

She's alive!

Finally got time to finish putting in the junkyard trans. It works perfectly. Shifts smooth. It seems to have a lot less drag that previous tranny. The only two things I have to check out is the speedo and cruise control. The speedo reads too fast and the cruise control does not work since installation. I am not sure if the speedo thing is as easy as removing the gear from the original tranny and swapping it? Any ideas would be great! Happy to be able to drive at highway speeds again!
