I have a 2002 f350 with the 7.3 with esof and the other day I noticed that the 4WD didn't work. It had always worked in the past but what I was wondering is how do I test the plug going into the 4WD switch because I think the switch might be bad due to the fact that the lights don't illuminate when I turn the truck lights on. Also what else can I test to find the fault? When I turn the dial to 4WD high or low nothing happens no noise from the transfer case and nothing displays on the dash. Any and all help would be much appreciated.
The light in the dash switch has nothing to do with it, normally dies in a few years anyways. I would start by replacing the relays under the hood first then go from there. The "4x4" dummy light is powered on the backside of the switch so if the Xfer case motor doesn't flip it into 4wd then the light will not come on. Easiest and cheapest thing to do is replace the two relays under the hood. They are on the drivers side fender well in a box all by themselves.
Yes, it's just a normal 5 prong relay without the tab. Same kind you'd use for a set of foglamps. Just make sure your amp rating is similar. Pop your cover off and take a look at yours.
Ok there are two boxes is it the relay box closest to the fender on the right or the one on the left? Both have two relays in them. Thanks and sorry foe all the questions
I would remove the harness on the xfer case motor, flip the switch into 4wd and check the harness down at the xfer case to see if you have power there. It's most likely the xfer case motor if all the fuses/relays check out. If it is that motor make sure you take your checkbook with you.
thanks for the input but after days of troubleshooting i ended up taking it to the local ford dealership and it ended up being a bad GEM module. Thanks once again.
