Ok. I know i've posted about this twice and can't find the posts(fingers a tad numb atm).3 Basicaly when I bought my '77 Chateau I took the battery out of the ex and put it in the van because the one in the van was crap(busted a hole in the top getting it off the van). I decided to put the battery back in and imediatly it tried to start itself on its own and tried to melt the neg post on the battery. Replaced the solenoid and the negative cable and while it didnt try to melt the battery post, it kept trying to start itself so I pulled the switch and replaced it and now nothing. I'm pulling what's left of my hair out trying to get this fun truck up and running!
I know the battery's good because I can put it in the van and have no problem getting it to crank. Also theres 2 wires that go into a harnes and don't remember which side of the solenoid they go on(their on the line from the battery atm). I'm about to pull the starter and see if that works unless there's something else I can test because I don't want to give up on it.
ok just got back from advance and the starter tests good so it's something between the switch in the cab and the wiring to the solenoid. Anyone know anything about the 2 wires that go into the harnes and which side of the solenoid they should be on? One looks like it has a small farell of some sort on it.
Those 2small wires bolt onto the battery side of the relay.did you un hook the wire that energizes the relay.think it's blue.this will tell you if the relay is bad or not.if you undo the wire and hook up your battery and starter energizes ,bad relay.if it doesn't the problem between the ignition switch and the wire.
I have a buddy that when he turns the head lights on it engages the starter, makes it a pain to travel at night. Lol just waiting for him to get time and warmer weather.melted wiring harness .that could be a problem as well.He hates electrical, but I understand it and don't mind it,love chalanges, just trouble shooting can be frustrating.
ever troubleshoot in sub-0 weather? doable but not fun lol. I'll probly go out and do some more troubleshooting when it gets warmer. Where do those 2 wires go?
I believe those two wires come from the ault or voltage reg and charge the battery,so they should go on the battery side.they should be fusable links.
And yes I have trouble shooted in sub zero, today to be exact.-20 c, to fix my garbage trailer lights, I'm still shivering.
