Can someone tell me what to check on front needle bearings to see if they need replacing. If they do do I have to replace the whole shaft or hub or what? I'm thinkin that the needle bearing is my problem but don't know much about it and can't find anything in the chiltons about it. I have an '01 f250 4x4 7.3
They are interference fit into the center of the bearing/wheel hub. When you remove the bearing/wheel hub, you will see the needle bearing .... look for worn/damaged rollers. If it is really dry, you may want to replace the bearing anyway since they are cheap from NAPA. If you don't replace ... clean and repack them well.
If they are really bad ... you may hear them grind, etc when you rotate the tire/wheel assy with the locking/4X4 hub UN-locked. Upon locking the hub, the offending noise will disappear.

Do you have any problems with the front end? What is the reason to check for replacement?
You can check on guzzles site for a step by step to take the bearing hubs off and relube. Welcome to guzzle's 4x4 Needle Bearing Maintenance Web Page
I'm getting a bad vibration and grinding in the front left. I just took it apart and the 4wd locking hub is internally torn up pretty bad. I'm guessing this is my problem. I'm about to order a new hub. Any suggestions?
Everybody has there own purchasing fancies, depends on how fast you need it. I look in Ebay for good brand name deals, if none there start at the auto parts stores.
