I got new cables from Autozone and they are the same length as the ones that came off the truck but they are short. The brake is applied when I get them hooked up.The ambluance package cables are 3 inches longer so I guess that's what I need.My question is how do I tell I have the ambulance package when I need to know for parts? It's a 94 f-250 4wd supercab 7.3 turbo with 8800lbs GVW.
If the new cables are the same length as the old ones they should, you would think, be OK.
Did you "unwind" the auto adjuster before attaching the new cables?
Auto adjuster?I thought there was no adjustment on the e-brake cables on the 92 and newer trucks.I put all new brakes on it and the e-brake levers were rubbing the hubs inside the drums.I'm thinking someone has put the wrong cables on it at one time and that's why the brakes were gone when I got the truck this fall. The ambulance cables are about 3 inches longer. The std. cables I bought were the same as the ones that came off the truck but if I were to hook them up to the lever inside the drum, the e-brake would be on,it starts spreading the shoes away from the pin at the top.It looks like I need the ambulance cables but I was wondering how to tell it had the ambulance package.I though maybe the diesel had a heavier duty std. package but the parts books don't list it that way.
There is an automatic adjuster in the pedal assembly.
What you need to do is pull on the single cable that comes from the pedal to extend the cable. It is a hard pull but you should get around 3in extra length. With the cable extended there is a small hole in the pedal assembly frame that lines up with a hole in the mechanism and you can fit a drill bit in to keep the cable from retracting again until you get it all hooked up. Then remove the drill bit and the adjuster will take up any slack in the cable. If you can`t find the hole for the drill bit then just keep a tension on the cable until you get it hooked up.
