Production on new V-8 to start at Essex plant in February
Production of a new fuel-efficient V-8 engine at Ford of Canada's Windsor's Essex Engine plant is scheduled to start Feb. 1, according to union officials.
So far about 210 production and tradesworkers are in the process of readying the plant for the official launch, said Renaud.
He said final volume numbers have yet to be set. "I know it's going to be slow going at the beginning until they get going," he said.
Renaud would not disclose which vehicles were in line for the new engine. But a source cited the Mustang sports car and F-150 pickup as the likely recipients.
It'll be very interesting to see what the price of a premium GT inflates to. The Camaro and Challenger are already quite a bit more expensive, I wouldn't be surprised to see them hitting $40K.
There's no final word on price (we'll definitely keep you updated on that regard), but as Ford's PR folks explained to us at the 5.0 reveal in Detroit, they can't raise the price too much or they'll push the Mustang out of its segment.
I think they'd be wise to try to keep the price as close to the current GT as is possible. As Ford's own PR folks have said, if they raise it too much, they'll push it out of it's segment. They need to keep it where they still can undercut the Challenger and Camaro.
I remember back in the day, my 84 5.0 GT was pretty much untouchable by any of the quote "performance" cars back then. I suspect this is about the same case, good to see the 5.0 stang back and the beginning of a new era!
That could make me feel like a high schooler again! I don't know about you John, but 2011 is my year according to my bride. I'm gettin' something, damn-it!

We're in the same boat Tim! 2011 is it for me. I'll likely keep my truck and get something else to play around in like this new GT.
Why didn't they put real headers (individual exhaust ports for each cylinder)instead of combining two exhaust ports into one? Would that be considered illegal regarding emissions control or something?
