I have a 1975 F250 highboy with a cab in rough shape. I have an opportunity to buy a F250 camper special with an outstanding body (no rust or dings). Would it be possible to swap in the cab of the 2WD truck to make a clean 4x4 F250 Highboy? My apologies if this has been answered here before but I tried Search and could not find my answer with the search terms entered.
BTW the truck has a C6 but I would probably like to install manual transmission in future.
Thanks for your help. Any information is greatly appreciated.
I can`t see why not. About 15 years ago, the cab on my 74 F350 dual rear wheel "cab & chassis" was getting pretty rusty. I got a cab from a 1977 F150 4x4, and swapped the cabs. On the DRW F350`s, the rear frame rails are closer together, so the rear cab mount setup is different. But I just drilled 2 new holes (the indentations were already there), and then it fit fine. But since both your cabs are single rear wheel, they should be interchangable. One concern may be gas tank location, my F350 origionally had just the gas tank behind the seat, luckily for my, my 77 cab also had the in cab tank, but not all cabs do. Don`t know if thats an issue for you or not. I used all my old steering column, power brake booster and master cylinder stuff, but used the 77 cabs wiring harness and dash, which gave me the bonus of intermittent wipers, a High Output heater, and a dual tank switch, so I added another tank.
Thanks for the reply, Rory428. I was worried that there may be some unknown fundamental difference in the cab to chassis fit which I guess I would discover after I had torn down two F250s. - That would be an "Oh, crap!".
I wonder if anyone else has tried this or at least has the expertise to know for certain if the 2wd and 4wd of these years simply installed the same cab assemblies?
I have a 78 F150 and we put a 77 F700 cab. First look , looks the same
but one sees the door handles and say WHAT (they have push buttons),
then they see the dash whats up with that. Nice round gauges tack,
vacuum gauge. sam
No worries, like previously mentioned all you will have to do is drill new mounting holes in the cab seeing as the frame rails aren't the same width on the Highboy. I'm installing a 79 F150 cab on my 74 Highboy. As for the tranny, don't worry about a later swap, the factory hole for a manual is also already there.
