460/400 bellhousing problem

Have a 460 going in 1978 F-350 2WD. Using what I think is 400 bellhousing. Bolts up ok but leaves about 2" space between transmission. Prefer not to move transmission/drive shaft forward to mate. Is 460 bellhousing longer than 400 bellhousing? Any adapter that can be used to account for this space?

What did you use for motor mounts and perches? Is there room to move the motor back two inches? the bellhousings and tranny mounts are the same for 400 and 460 I believe. It sounds like a motor mount problem to me.

Just another thought. Is it possible that you have the motor mounts switched around on the block. I have not personally done this swap, but have heard and read a lot about it. Its possible that the mounts are 1" off center, meaning if you switch them you would be 2" off. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

460/400 bellhousing problem

have you bolted the tranny and bellhousing to the motor? If a 460 bellhousing is deeper than a 400 Bellhousing then your input shaft will not be long enough if you use the 460 bellhousing. Im guessing the 460 bell is deeper considering the fact that there is no way in hell you would fit a 460 flywheel and clutch into a 400 bellhousing.
Most likely you will just have to move the motor mounts.
What flywheel and clutch are you using anyway?
Im putting a 460 into an IH pickup using a 400 bellhousing and I had to use a 390 flywheel and a pressure plate from who knows what. I had to find a diaphragm clutch for the 390 flywheel and i was told that they were never made so i got what im guessing is to be a 351W pressure plate and had the 390 flywheel re-drilled so it would work. After doing all that I find out that they DO have diaphragm pressure plates for a 390 flywheels(damn it). And to make things more complicated i was trying to bolt a the tranny on the other day and it wasnt working because the splines on the input shaft were hitting the pilot bearing. At this point i was getting impatient and wasnt aware of the problem yet to I tried forcing it on by drawing it up tight with the tranny bolts and managed to bust the ear off the tranny where the bolt goes through. Now im currently looking for a tranny that will work.

I think i know your problem. Was the 460 out of a manual? If it was its still got the pilot bushing in it. If this is the case then that the reason it won't go in the last few inches.
