I purchased my 87' F-250 about 3 months ago. It has a 351w w/4bbl and is a 4X4 auto. I have replaced the starter 5 times now. The first 3 times it snapped the mounting tabs off, and the last 2 times the solenoid has fried. I'm at a lost as to what's causing all my problems. The starters have either come from Autozone or Advance, I've tried to shim it out, but they will not last longer than a few weeks.
Check the bell housing bolts, make sure they are tight with no gap showing between the bell and engine block at any point.
Also look at the flywheel, check to see if its broke, look at all the way around and also nearest to where it bolts to the mainshaft, look for a crack just outside that area especially if the bell housing bolts are found to be loose.
go on ebay and look for a ford mean grean starter the thing will crank over a seized engine up a hill in 5th gear towing a trailer. solved all my problems ( i did have to shim) the solenoid is on the starter itself so there are pretty much 2 options you have in terms of wiring. me personally i just took the easy rout and jumped a wire from the big positive post to the solenoid wire so many benefits too you can rotate the starter so it accommodates headers frame oil pan so theres no clearence issues plus the hi rpm motor is geared down 4.1 it cranks the engine faster believe it or not but i would also look at the condition of the flywheel or pressure plate
I had this problem on a ford ranger. One time all the tabs broke and it drug on the road for 50 miles, I couldn't hear it because it was raining out pretty hard. Anyway by the time someone flagged me down only half of it was left. You should have seen there face at advanced autoparts when I told them it wasn't working for some reason.
Anyway turned out the motor was out of time just a little bit and was causing it to jerk back when it started. Check the timing.
that mean green starter looks like a hoss-bet it ain't cheap !
the last starter youll ever buy! so by my 3rd starter in 2 months i think the $120 price tag is better then however many starters you need to buy. as the truck has parts that give out i just replace them with the absolute best top quality so its not gonna be a problem anymore
