axle bearings

Hi, new to forum, love what I see here.I have a quick question-are the axle bearings in a 9 inch rear the same from a 78-79 F-150 SB with 31 spline axles? The reason I ask is the old bearings were open the newly installed bearings are sealed-do I need to take the races out of the rear or did I get the wrong bearings installed? Thanks for the help

Welcome to FTE

There are two different axle bearings, two different axle seals used on 1974/86 9" F100/150's, Bronco's & E100/150's rear axles (1974/79 9" passenger cars).

When you look these part numbers up in Ford car/truck parts catalogs it doesn't say which 28 or 31 splined axleshafts takes which parts...which has been a PITA since 1974.

D4AZ1225A .. Axle Bearing-Tapered Roller Bearing type / Comes with the seal / Fits: 1974/86 9" rear axles.

D4AZ1177A .. Axle Seal / Use with Tapered Roller Bearing / Fits: 1974/86 9" rear axles.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D8AZ1225C .. Axle Bearing-Sealed Ball Bearing type / Comes w/the lock ring / D8AZ1225C replaced: DOAZ1225A, C1SZ1225A, B7A1225A.

Fits: 1957/86 9" rear axles (except 1970/72 F100's with the 9 3/8" ring gear).

EOTZ1S177CA .. Axle Seal / Use with Sealed Ball Bearing / EOTZ1S177CA replaced: EOTZ1177C, C9AZ1177A, B7A1177A.

Fits: 1957/86 9" rear axles (except 1970/72 F100's with the 9 3/8" ring gear).

Now-using the parts numbers you provided:
D4AZ1225A .. Axle Bearing-Tapered Roller Bearing type / Comes with the seal / Fits: 1974/86 9" rear axles.

D4AZ1177A .. Axle Seal / Use with Tapered Roller Bearing / Fits: 1974/86 9" rear axles
THATS WHAT I HAD PRIOR TO INSTALLATION-
Can I take the race out of the rear end housing and use the NEWLY installed sealed ball bearings or do I need to get the conical tapered bearing like I had.?Will the new style sealed ball bearings work in the housing after removal of the race?Or is this a NO-NO?

You have to use the bearing/seal that was the original type.
