Hey All,
Sorry to cross post, but I've got some questions about more modern trannys than what was originally in my '56 F100.
How do I tell the difference between a C4 and C6 tranny?
And does anyone out there have experience in the speedo drive gears? I went to replace the speedo cable with a new one and found there is no drive gear on the old one. That's why the speedo doesn't work (as far as I know to date). My local ford dealer shows at least three dozen different drive gears with no ideas as to what goes with which tranny. I really would like to at least have some idea of how fast I'm going when the cops pull me over!
Craig, check your yellow pages for auto shops that calabrate speedos. There is usually one in an average size town. If you can't find one ask the local cops. People go there when caught for speeding and the speedo says not.

Thanks for the help guys! I'll slide under the beast inna few minutes and have my answer. I hadn't even thought of the local speedo shop, duh! I should own the place by now with all the gauges I've had done over the years...
Looked at the tranny last night and it turns out to be something completely different than what I thought! I'm not sure what to do about that. There's three pieces to the case, bell housing, tranny case and tail/rear housing. Leaking like a sieve. When were these trannys made? Are they worth using or rebuilding? I seem to remember my Dad's '65 wagon having a 35XC (1 or 2???) and a cruise-a-matic, but that one is long gone so I can't go look at it.
Craig, sounds like the FMX to me. I didn't look under my red truck to check out the makeup of the cruse-o-matic, that has the green dot on the shifter, and most likely was replaced after about 66.
I think most agree the C6 is the perfered auto, the C4 is a lighter tranny Ok for just a driver. The FMX was installed in trucks, should work all around, but is considered not as bullet proof as the C6.
