Whatever happened to.........

Those awesome Ford OEM underhood service lights on a retractable cord reel? My 84 F-150 had one, it would reach all the way to the back of the truck, great for all kinds of things that might come up. Last one I saw was on a 86 F-250, have not seen any on newer trucks since. Love to have one on my 93, never see them in the J-yards.....Anyone know any sources?

I've seen them in a mid-90's Chevy 1500... so you can broaden your junk yard search...

Not sure about OEM ones, but you can find something similar at places like Autozone or Walmart. I have something like that, it's a small light with a retractable cord like what you described. It plugs into the lighter socket and has a magnet on a hinged plate so you can stick it to a metal surface and aim the light where you need it. I think they're like $10 and mine's worked great.

Yep. One of Ford's "better ideas"

They are rather difficult to find in a junkyard that are operable. I got lucky on mine, I've got one for parts, and do have another one that works well. I snag everyone that I can find on my excursions.

I've got a wire under my hood I always figured was for a under-hood light. Now I know what it goes to, I want one!

I've been able to score three of them in the local JY's. Be sure to get the wiring harness that goes across to the drivers side of the hood that plugs into the harness on that side.

Does anyone know what bulb they take? I have one with no bulb. Has a two post base, kind of different for a single purpose bulb.

I guess they must have cost too much to continue thru to later models, too bad another good idea left behind. Some Ford engineer must have realized that many things require a light other than just under the hood troubles. Gonna keep my eyes open in the J-yard

I have been unable to find good working ones. The contacts go bad on them. I took mine and wired in a toggle switch.

I had one that I placed on ebay before with what was **supposed** to be a "buy it now" of $10.00. I mistakenly placed $1.00. No wonder it sold within the hour! Couldn't back out of it...it was my mistake.

Now if I can only find another one of the underhood toolboxes... I had one of those, but it kinda...sorta...fell out the back of tailgateless (at the time) truck and smashed into a bazillion pieces.

My tool box has proven more useful than I thought it would.

According to my manual, it's a 90 bulb.

Mine wasn't working when I bought the truck, but a couple of weeks later it began to & has been good since - I think the mercury switches can play up.
