well it got kinda cold over the last few days and we parked the truck. it snowed and iced a littla (not much mind you just a little) and quickly melted away. started up the truck to drive it home (parked it where we could get to it if weather was bad) and couldent get it into gear. would let clutch out and it would just grind. shifter was in the correct position. after i fiddled with it i got it into first and let off the clutch and it simply died. started it up revved it and dumped the clutch and the passenger rear wheel made a noise(sounded like somthing broke loose) and started spinning. couldent get it to move foward so i put it into reverse and it dragged the driver's rear wheel... revved it hard and dumped the clutch and it finnally broke loose also... driving it home noticed rear wheels were making more noise than usual...
what went wrong? bearings? brakes lock? differential FUBAR? clutch issue? tranny? combination of somthing?
thanks guy and merry christmas
Sounds like a rearend problem. Have you checked your rear brakes out? drums? shoes? If those are okay I would pop the diff cover and see if there's anything obvious going on in there.
16ft trailer full o firnature and house crap.... hitch was scraping against the ground and the I6 did fine... only moved it about a mile to where it was going.... I wasent aware they were going to pull the trailer with my truck instead of the chevy 1500 we had (we diddent care if we tore that POS up and it was bought to be a work truck) i was pissed...
i think my bearings might be going out but i just replaced them when i did my shocks, less than a year ago.. i've done almost no pulling since then.... i hear a humming noise on and off when i'm on the highway and it gets worse in the rain... when i mean on and off it sounds like a celing fan when you first turn it on...
if you're gonna be doing alot of heavy lifting with that truck i'd consider doing a axle swap from a bigger truck... if its 4wd be sure the ratio is the same as the old one
I remember reading that story about him hauling all that junk about a couple months ago while digging through old threads. That thread about overloading an F150 is an oldie.
ok here's a update,
i jacked up the wheels indivuidally from under the axle and checked for any play, there was little if any in either wheel. so i pulled the wheel off the side that locked up and tried to turn the drum, AHA! found i had some hardcore brake drag. pulled the drum and found the shoes/drum were not worn all that bad so threw it back togeather and got it out of the garage it was in. called pintoches and he told me how to adjust the brake pressure and we assume that will fix it... but i stumbled into a bigger issue
checked the yoke of the differential (not the driveshaft) the U-joints had no play in it but the differential did, both side to side and had slack when turning, figured that meant ring and pinion are going kaput.
looked up ring and pinion sets and they run about 150-200, where as a Positraction or lockers cost around 500 JawsGear.com
IF i put a positraction or lockers it it wouldnt that also have the ring and pinion inside it? so wouldent it be worth it to go Posi (i know 'posi' is GM but its easier than saying limited slip differential)
No, your ring gear bolts on to the carrier, which is either a stock open carrier, or a locker carrier, or a posi carrier. You would still need to buy a whole new ring and pinion too, because your old ones are shot. If I were you and I wanted to buy all new parts, I would just put the R&P in it and call it good. (make sure that's what your problem is first) If you don't mind junkyard parts, I would go find a rearend at a junkyard, check it for play, get one with posi if you can find it, make sure the gear ratio is what you want, and get it and throw it under your truck. You could get an 8.8 or a 9in but the brakes and whatnot will bolt right up if you get another 8.8.
Your ring and piniion might not necessarily be bad. The piniion bearings sound shot, but it depends how bad they have been for how long. It also depends on how much money you have. Now might be a good time to change ratios if you want, but then do you have a 4x4 (have to change the front too), if you do a locker, you might want to look into a selectable one - more money now, but will save on tires in the future and has better manners for the street, and the list can go on. If you are looking cheap, drop the cover, replace the pinion bearings, crush sleeve, inspect (should really replace) carrier bearings, and new seals. Inspect the ring gear and confirm it is still okay.
well i'm broke as a joke, the big check i got from santa.... well it diddent come. pintoches has a parts truck we're prolly gonna buy cheap, has a good rear end and M5sod tranny, prolly gonna swap the rear and do the tranny swap this summer (wanted to make it a 5speed anyway but i cant shell out the cash for a ZF
and i should have said in my sig its 2wd, sorry! fixing that now
