Transmision retrofit
Which 4sp do you have, the 3sp w/granny low (toploader), or the 3sp+OD (linkages on side of tranny). I'm assuming you are looking for overdrive. The modified engines (351M,400) share the same bellhousing pattern w/ the Lima engines (429,460). I have seen some postings by some who have tried to convert their 460's to Manual by utilizing the M bellhousing and having trouble because the flywheel and/or crank flange (can't remember exactly) were thicker than the clearance in the M bellhousing. Certainly the 460 has lived into the 90's as a Ford Truck engine option. If you can figure out flexplate/flywheel compatibility, mayber you can utilize one of these. Regarding the E40D (computer controlled automatic 4sp for trucks) I have seen ads recently in Ford magazines for stand alone wiring kits to adapt these to non-computerized applications. I have seen the 3sp+OD (floor shifted) tranny that appeared in 78-early 80's in a F150 w/ 400. I just acquired one of these in a 79 F150 w/302. I know they are kinda clunky with their linkage shifter, but I'm not finding it that bad, and it appears that I am getting much better mileage (along w/ 2.75 gearing) than I had w/ my other 302 powered truck.
