Hello all, this isn't a question about a ford but thought u guys woud know. Im lookn at a 1997 p3500 step van with a chevy 6.5. The problem is it chuggs white smoke on a cold start, but stops in a minute but then smokes blue for 5 minutes. This is in 25 degree weather not plugged up. It has 98,000 miles on it and zero blow by, it was a goverment truck, and I can get it for 2000$ the blue smoke scarred me but the no blo by confussed me. Tired of workn out of my 01 250 with the 6 inch lift and 37,s need somthn easy in and out. Thanks guys have a good Christmas... Ryan

A friend of ours has a 90's Chevy 6.5L diesel with over 400k miles on it w/o any issues at all. He did have to rewire the entire truck though, but that was years ago.

The blue smoke is not a problem. I have a 98 Suburban with the 6.5 in it and I see the same thing when I start mine. The 6.5's are an OK motor, won't hold a candle to a 7.3, but seems to do the job.
Mine has 145,000 miles on it and is running good. I had to replace both heads a couple of years ago due to the radiator not flowing correctly and caused hot spots in the heads and they cracked.
The 6.5 with get you decent fuel mileage, 14-16 mpg on an average. One thing you need to find out is when the fuel pump was changed last, not if, but when it was changed. GM warranted for 11 years or 120,000 mile due to poor design of their electronic pump and driver that makes it work.
I changed the pmd (pump mounted driver) to a remote location off the fuel pump and have never had any more trouble. This is the kit I used
