Well folks, the ongoing saga of my '64 continues. I did put the overflow bottle in the other night and decided to run it on the highway several miles to blockbuster. On the way home the temp reach 260+. I parked it, popped the hood, and witnessed a gusher of coolant spouting from the overflow bottle I installed. This morning I went the auto parts store and got a thermostat, coolant, and Prestone's radiator flush kit. I pulled off the thermostat and the fella that had it before me put the bugger in backwards. Unless I am wrong, the spring side should go towards the block. It does have an Edelbrock intake and appears to have the standard water pump, if that would make a difference. It is now running at about 205+/-. The was some white smoke coming from the exhaust but tappered off after running it for a short distance. Have I done any considerable damage or should I check anything else? You help will once again be appreciated. Thanks,
Is there water in the oil? foamy brown goo!!
If not you may be OK.. edlebrock intakes only have water passages in the front of the intake and there is a chance for the gasket to fail...
IF you see a loss of water in the coolant recovery tank day by day(level cold check) then you have to find the leak. If you have access to a radiator presure checker (check it cold) do that ASAP!!
Hopefully you caught it in time
ps: I use a 7lb rad cap not the 13 because of the gasket sealing thing on the edlebrock manifold..
I use a 195 stat and 205 is normal to see.
Mike I hope you haven't screwed up anything. Man sometimes you need to leave well enough alone when you are dealing with a 40 year old design. You posted the other day that it was running OK. I'm afraid that you let the water boil out. Having an alu. intake you could have done some damage, with the high heat. I don't agree with the other John about 195 stat. I have never until here heard of running one over 180. I have been around the FEs for years and it's always been 180, and a 12 or 13 pound cap, but that is his call.
You need to keep watch with the white smoke and an antifreeze smell at the tailpipe. It is possiable that you could have blown a head gasket, or cracked a head.
Keep a tight watch, and good luck
John

In the still cool hours of the night, you can hear chevys rusting away.
There is no water in the oil so far and it still idles fine, although there is still a faint indication of white smoke. I will follow your suggestions and keep an eye on this. This was the first time I had it on the highway. Most of my other trips have been rather short with the exception of last weekend I put about 15 miles or so on it in town. I thought I was beginning to make some headway. Your right John.. I should learn to leave well enough alone, but at least I have a developed a flat forehead from constantly slapping myself and saying "Uh-oh.... shouldn't have done that.". The only plans for it now are new exhaust donuts, a change of the speedo gearing to bring the mphs down closer to being more accurate, and the trip to the body man next weekend for cab mounts/floor/installation of LMC's engine mounts. I found out tonight the only place in town that does the pressure checks won't be open until Monday. The spring side of the thermostat should be towards the block though, right? I just want to make sure I at least did this right. Thanks again for your help,
My old 302 w/ Edelbrock intake would run around 190 typically, but would go higher when idleing in summer heat. I think that the smallblock water pumps don't move the water like the FE pumps do. My 390 barely reads into normal. The 302 goes well into normal.
