I just bought a 1974 F-250 4X4 with 51,000 original miles. I have a lot of oil spinning out of the drivesided rear axel at the wheel. Is there an easy fix for this or am I taking the whole rear apart? It is a Dana 60.
First, before doing anything else, check to see if the vent tube on the axle is plugged. Many seals have been changed that didnt need changing because the vent tube is plugged and the built up pressure in the axle pushes the gear oil past the seals.
I'm assuming this is a full-floating hub, if it is it is relatively easy to replace the seal.
1. block front wheels, release emergency brake, jack up rearend
2. back off brakes, remove axle nuts and axle
3. remove spindle nuts
4. remove hub and wheel assembly
5. replace seal
6. install hub
7. tourqe spindle nuts
8. install axle and new axle gasket
9. adjust brakes
do check to see if the vent is clear, but even if that is what caused the seal to leak, the seal needs to be replaced
