Not sure 4wd is working??

ok its a 96 f150 4.9l 4wd. I was out in the snow with it a little yesterday, Nothing that i really needed four wheel for but i just wanted to try it because i just got the truck recently. So i went off the side of the road a little and it was still in 2wd and it was moving but not too much, so i put it in 4HI and it really didn't feel like it made a difference. I tried 4LO and i could tell that the RPM's were high because of the LO gear ratio, but it still didn't really feel like it made a difference. Is there anyway to check if it is working. And if it isn't what are the common things to go wrong to make it not work? thanks

Have someone look underneath while you put it in gear and slowly roll forward. Does the front driveshaft and axle shafts turn?

1. Put it in 4wd Hi

2. Get in the snow

3. Hang your head out the window looking at front wheel

4. GIVE 'ER HELL

If the front wheel spins, your 4wd is working. Works every time.
