4X4 won't disengage

1996 f150 standard cab long box with floor shift 4X4 and 5 speed manual transmission and 5.0 engine.

i don't know how to disengage the 4X4 on this truck. its stuck in LO 4X4 and i can't get it out. i want it in 4X4 HI. it has the auto hubs in the front so i assume i just move the lever on the floor to the desired position but its not moving. what do i do?

need answers quick. gotta move the truck out of the appartment parking lot before it gets towed with the snow on the ground. they gotta plow...

If you need to move it, I don't know you don't just get in and move it. Does the truck not move in 4lo?

It has to be in neutral to shift between 4lo and 4hi. If you have it in neutral, then it might be binding. Drive it back and forth a little bit and try it again. If it's stuck then try some penetrating oil on the linkage and don't neglect it. The linkage needs a bit of TLC a couple times a year, especially where they use salt on the roads.

if its like my 87 you need to push the stick to the left then push forward without the truck being in gear (and i push the clutch in too)

Sometimes it takes alot of force and if it sticks dont go all out on it or u will break the cable.
instead use a push and release technique

There's no cable. It's all mechanical linkage.

what ever it is its stuck like nothing else. i had the clutch pushed in and the shifter in neutral position but the floor shifter don't move. do i need to shut the truck off for it to shift or not?

its not that i can drive it, i just need to be able to go faster then 15 mph so i can bring it home for the weekend

The truck doesn't need to be off, but it sounds like either the linkage is rusted and bound, or the driveline is bound.

If the shifter won't move at all the linkage is seized, don't force it or you will break it, you need to remove it from the transmission, disassemble and lubricate it.

It definitely needs to be lubricated then. You might get away with spraying it with penetrating oil or white lithium grease.

Yes, be careful. On my '88 150 I put it in 4L once to pull a tractor, when I went to shift back into 2H, it didn't seem to bind up but the bolts for the shifter snapped off.
My current F250 won't go into 4L or N, but I don't worry about it.

this may help....i dont even have the floor shift hooked up to the transfer case.. just go below do what u got to do to detcah the floor shifter then just tap the lever on the trans case towards the back of the truck with ur hand or lightly with a hammer all the way back is 2 wheel 4 hi is the next click from 2 wheel towards the front of the truck. it is a pain in the *** to get it to stop just right on 4 hi without it going to neutral but it may take a few tries no biggie. i found the best way is to pull it towards 4 hi with my hand and just b4 its gonna go i just tap it with a ratchet still maintaining pressure from my hand. otherwise it goes right thru 4 h into neutral. just do what i wrote ull b allset

im kinda having the same prob with my 91 f150 4wd,the front end is free but the rear end acts like its 4wd still any body got any ideas, the 4wd drive has been used 3 times in the past year and its never been beat up or taken in the mud,i went up a steep six foot incline got out unlocked the hubs and put it in to 2wd and acted like it was in 4wd lo in the rear end, took it home and found that some wires had got wrapped around the 4wd drive line and ripped, had them fixed but it still acts like its locked up in the rear,is their a fuse or relay ?

OP- not sure how yours is, but on my F250 you need to push the shifter down in order to get in and out of 4L. IIRC the owners manual also says that you may need to be rolling in neutral in order to get in or out of 4L easier.
