I recently just found out that my pinion bearing in my rear end is completely SHOT! I'm not much of a mechanic, so I took a look at some of my options. My first option is just to replace the rear end with a used one. I found a used rear end for about $325. My other option is to get the bearing replaced and pay upwards of $1000 to get it fixed. I learned that if i decide to just replace the rear end I will probably have to end up getting new brake lines and u-clamps that hold the suspension. I don't now enough about the gears in the rear end to try and replace the bearing myself. I talked to some friends who know more about trucks than i do and they all seem to have conflicting ideas. I would like to know what my best option would be.
Well.. you're not a mechanic so how do you know the pinion bearing is "completely shot"? Sounds like something a slimey garage mechanic would say when he's about to rip you off because all the truck really needs is a new pinion seal.
i bought a new pinion seal for the truck and replaced it. and now the seal is bad again because the bad bearing is causing the drive shaft to ruin it. the problem is definitely the bearing. the drive shaft is moving like in radical motion, not smooth like it should.
To replace a pinion bearing $1000 labor is robbery at gunpoint in broad daylight in front of the police station.. you could have all new gears installed in both axles for that $$. I suggest you do some more price shopping because a junkyard axle will likely need bearings and seals too.
I agree that $1000 is way, way too much. For that price you could get a completely rebuild axle including all gears, bearings, and seals, and a new limited slip carrier, and still be paying too much.
You're right about the pinion bearing causing the seal to go bad. I'm also in the same boat as you with my Bronco. I had a lead on a used axle the other day for $90 but the guy backed out on me. It's holding together for now but I think I'm going to go with a junkyard axle and just inspect it thoroughly before I install it.
