Tested ballast resistor. 5+ ohms, replaced it with a new one at 1 ohms.

I hate to tell you but it doesnt get much better than a duraspark distributor and the cheapo HEIs are certainly a step in the wrong direction. Among a laundry list of problems associated with them is the above 4000rpm spark scatter and irratic low rpm idle. I bought one out of sheer curiosity to see how it would work but never installed it. I initally swapped to a MSD 6al to replace my duraspark box that seemed to leak "goop" all over my inner fenders every 6 months and have not since looked back. Id cancel the dizzy order and get a 6al.

FWIW, MSD uses duraspark guts in their distributors - chevy ford dodge etc.

This is the first time I have hit a wall with any dura spark system. I have installed and wired prob 10 of them, and if they didn't work all of the sudden, it was 9 times out of ten the box, the other one time was the coil. I tested the distributor lilke they say to in my book, and it tested ok, but guess could be a false positive. That distributor has less than 20 hours on it tho, spo I wouldn't think thjat would be the issue. Are the HEI conventions really that bad? I've tuned a handfull of Chevy motors for a friend, and they seem to run strong n smooth up to where I run mine. .

i had a brainbox go bad once that didn't melt all over the damn place. sold that bronco over it, couldn't figure out why it would barely get any spark and overlooked the box because i didn't see a puddle of crap on my fender well.

The Procomp (and the similar knockoffs) are really that bad.

Do a search on 460ford.com for Procomp distributors and you'll read 100 threads about how wonderful they are for keeping the shop door open

I am going to be using a D.U.I. on my I6 300 build in the next few months(as money permits)

Good luck with the spark problem. I had a similar problem in my 83 bronco, and I just gave up after a certain amount of time. I didn't pay anything for it, and all it was doing was eating up my money. Wish I had kept it now. It would help melt some of the snow around if nothing else!

instead of points, i use a pertronix ignitor ignition system. simple easy magnetic breaker points elimination unit.

sally, even the old guys got soft

i was tossing around that option back when i had that truck, but the points never gave me any real issues. i just kept a spare set of points and condenser crap in the tool box with a little file and feeler gauge. only had to do a roadside repair once if i remember right.

My old 68 bronco would burn up a set of points in a month. Somthoing about running 6800 rpm might of had someting to do with it. I swapped that to a conversion kit

Ive got those conversion deals on all my cars. I hate points unless its in something that is driven daily...even then they suck.
