I have a '65 f100 with a late 70's 351w. I would like to install headers but I am not sure if I will have a problem with clearance Etc. Any suggestions?
I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY '69 F-100 WITH A 351W ENGINE! SINCE FORD NEVER PUT THE WINDSOR IN ANY TRUCK OLDER THAN AN '80 MODEL,NO ONE SELL HEADERS THAT FIT OUR OLD TRUCKS WITH THE 351W!! NOT EVEN AS SWAP HEADERS.I HAVE TRIED A SET FOR A '67-'72 F-100/302 ENGINE (TOO SHORT) AND A SET FOR AN '80-'91 F-150/351W ENGINE (NO WHERE CLOSE TO FITTING), SO THE NEXT SET I'M GOING TO TRY IS A SET OF BLOCK HUGGERS. IF THEY FIT I'LL POST ANOTHER REPLY TO LET YOU KNOW!
Guy's a good set of duals will most likely give you all the increase in performance that you can expect. Headers are for engines running 4000 rpms and higher. I own a truck with a set, and would not do it again.
Put that money on the outside where all can see.

I have performance muffers and want a better sound but I am also looking for better mpg. If I don't go with the headers what do you suggest to improve my mileage?
rear wheel ratio to engine. All non overdrive trannys turn 1 to 1 in high gear, even if it has 10 forward gears. Your truck most likely came with 3.25 rear gear if V8 and st.dr., 3.00 with auto, 3.75 I6 and st. dr., and 3.50 with auto.
Not knowning what ratio you now have I can't suggest one for you. but you want to go lower in number as it is called a taller gear.
Another method is to go to taller tires. What either of these changes do is slow the engine down to move the truck 20 ft at the same MPH. Slowing the engine down will increase the MPG.
If you want a better sound get Flowmaster mufflers installed. Most guys would not be disappointed.
Either of these changes will directly effect you speedo reading, you will have to compensate.
