Please help.I need some input from you guys.
I have been experiencing vibration in my 1965 f100 truck. I was confident that I would eventually run it down and I'm pretty sure I have found that the harmonic balance pulley is the problem. I have been using an electronic timer so I had no need to pay any attention to the timing notch on the crankshaft pulley.
After checking out all of the possible contributors to the vibration I have narrowed it to the balancer pulley on the crankshaft. The timing mark on the pulley is off about 30 degrees
so, after checking the drive shaft, transmission, clutch assembly, pilot bearing I finally thought I'd kill the engine right at the speed the vibration was the worst, first in neutral, and then in gear with clutch disengaged. The vibration went away. I wish I had thought of doing that before.
Now my problem is finding a good used or new harmonic balancer for the 240-6. Any idea's? I haven't had much luck.
I find it hard to believe the balancer is the problem. My 292 has a slight vibration I can hear through the Hurst floor shifter. My balancer, when I bought the truck, was completely severed from the rubber dampener. I replaced it and still have the vibration. Had the driveshaft rebuilt and balanced, still vibrates. Are your motor mounts (rubber parts) in good condition? Have you checked your flywheel for runout? If you find the problem, let us know.
I have read that sixes are prone to vibration from harmonic balancers being spun; no idea why. I would suggest having yours shipped to and rebuilt by Damper Doctor, 1055 Parkview Ave, Redding, CA 96001-3314 rather than a new one. My 289/302 balancer came back looking brand new and for $67 which is almost half of a new one. His turn around time is very quick; much quicker than the shipping time. He has an e-mail address but for some reason, it isn't on the invoice; I can find it for you if you are interested. (I should get a commission.)
I did a quick search with Google Search, fast and good too. and it turned up http://members.aol.com/damperdoc with an email of

You already have the mail address.
Hope this helps.

In the still cool hours of the night, you can hear chevys rusting away.
Thanks Lee and John, it looks like the Damper Doctor is a good source. I called and a reconditioned harmonic balancer for my 240-6 is only $49, the only problem now is that I've got to find a used one to send because my truck is my daily driver and I can't be down very long.
Thanks again, I appreciate you guys.
