i have access to several lo-mile 460's from lincolns. other than oil pan& exhaust manifolds what other problems will i run into, intake, water pump , front end bolt ons? will be going into 77 f-250 2wd that already has 460. available engs are from 73 to 77 cars, best one is 73 reg gas eng, any problems with valves?
The car and truck engines were the same up to 79 when Ford redesigned the 460 internally. When they did this they lengthened the cylinder bores so the pistons stayed in the bore farther at BDC.They also reduced the size of the counterweight on the crank so it would clear the block.By doing this it was necessary to externally balance the engine so if you run into a 460 that you re not sure of the year look at the casting # behind the starter. If the # is D9TE the engine is newer then 79.As for valves they are all the same except the CJ and SCJ engines which used bigger valves. In 71 when unleaded gas came in the valve seats were induction hardened so they are compatible with todays gas.The 2wd truck pans had a longer sump that held an extra litre of oil.The car pan will fit in its place fine. All the accessory bolt holes are in the same spots so the truck parts will fit.You must also use the truck pullies. The car engines had an air injection pipe that connected to the back of the heads.Trucks sometimes did but just as often did not .These can be plugged if not needed with no consequences. If you have a 460 that is newer than 1970 it would be a good idea to replace the timing chain with a multi keyway double roller set. When you install it advance the cam to 4 degrees. When emmisions became a concern back in the early 70 s Ford retarded the camshaft timing 8 degrees.By advancing the cam beck you will feel a noticeable difference in power and mileage. All stock replacement timing sets are made with the timing retarded so a specialty set is needed.Any other questions? email me at www.mikecolin@sprint.ca
