Well...my ford threw its ring gear from its
flexplate. So I need to take the transmission
down and bolt on a new flexplate. Problem is, the
ring gear is lodged up against the transmission bellhousing, so I cant turn the engine to unbolt
the converter from the flexplate.
My first thoughts are to get a crowbar and try
to pry the ring gear away from bellhousing so I can turn the engine. Is this dangerous? I dont
know if Id be applying too much force against the
crank (and Id be prying from the edge of the flywheel, meaning the force would be coming from one side).
If prying that thing is unsafe, is there anything
else I can do to get my transmission away from the
flexplate far enough that I could change the flexplate?
Maybe remove the rear tranny mount, and loosen the engine mounts enough so you can tip the engine back a little (and disconnect the exhaust so it won;t han up. Now you should be able to remove the tranny and leave the converter hooked up to the engine. (Pull tranny straight back until it clears the torque converter.) Now you should be able to get the ring gear off, and take the converter off.

If your careful, you can unbolt the bellhousing and slide the trans back leaving the converter bolted to the engine. A good transmission jack will help
Wow what a dilemma! I've never seen that happen. I think the suggestions to date are helpful. The only thing I'd add is that the ring gear is brittle. Therefore, it shouldn't take much force to get it to snap if you decide to pry on it. Oh yeah–MAKE SURE YOU WEAR EYE PROTECTION! Good luck. :-)
a # 2 buckshot in a 3 1/2 inch twelve gauge works great..... hahahahaha
seriously (without the bud light talking) undo your tranny bolts, and tranny mounts, and crossmember. use a jack to steady the
motor. and tie a chain to your tranny tailhousing, then hook it on the 4-wheeler (or equivalent), seriously i had to do that on a threespeed. and pull if you break something go the the local junk yard and buy another...
