I prefer the older version engine. I own both. Personally, I would go with a manual tranny over an automatic. The older engine will likely give you better mileage. If you go with the E4OD, install a transgo tugger kit, and get a good aftermarket torque converter. Make sure you have a big enough transmission cooler too.

It's going to be a cruiser more than anything. I plan to use the E4od and beef it up for sure. I've read that the tranny does better with an aftermarket controller...

I'm going to use the newer fuel pump and front accesories from the newer engine on the 97 engine.

from what i have heard the '97 block is supposed to be the strongest. not sure how that could be, but just what i heard. If i were you i would only use the fuel pump from the SD if it's good. other than that build yourself a regulated return system or buy one. the stock SD fuel system is a dead head system and sux it up. you will want to put pre and post pump fuel filters on there and delete the bowl in the valley. just my opinion.

So I have a 1994 350 with a 1996 engine in it. And I have access to a 1999 7.3 PSD. What all could I use from the '99 or if i could just use the '99 block and swap over a bunch of the accessories.

you need to figure out if it's an early '99 or late '99. either way they both had different bottom ends than the OBS. other components though are interchangable. if it's a late 99 then you want to take the HPOP from it for sure b/c its a higher output pump than ours are. you can also use the turbo setup if you would ever want to run a GTP38R setup. many things can be used from it... not much point in changing to the '99 though unless your '96 engine is blown

Not as a complete unit. And you wouldn't want one anyway!

Sam, thanks for the comments there. i actually did no research on that. i have the book that all the ford diesel mechanics got when the SD's came out on the PSD. it lists in there all the differences, how to work on them, special tools, wiring schematics, torque specs list, etc. its the book that they use for when they gotta take their tests on the new trucks. i have read that book about 50 times now b/c it somehow doesn't get old to me. i can post pics if anyone wants. its got a pic for most of the stuff i mentioned up there. LoL. So yeah, the ford mechanics should be much smarter than they are, but i guess since they work for money instead of fun and don't care about the customers trucks like we care for our own they don't turn out to be all that great b/c they are trying to do things as fast as possible. this book is pretty dang good. gonna go read it again now....

Would love some pics on Turbo. Also, can I put the intercooler from a 99 on my 97 somehow?

Holy thread revival! 12 years from the original post and 11 since it was last active.

Since this thread started, turbo options have opened a bit and chances are good that the original commenters would go in a different direction.

For installing a SD intercooler on the OBS, Yes. There is now a kit available which includes all the hangars, mounts, and instructions for alterations. If keeping the small diameter OE intake plenum, will need an early 99 spider to match. This is a common mod.

In any event, do some searching around as these topics have good coverage. Might want to search through the SD 7.3 section as well seeing as there is a lot of crossover with the motors.

By the way, welcome to FTE.

There are 2 different 99 trucks out there. An early 99 is different from the late 99 and up trucks. So, any kind of upgrade you would want to use a late 99 or newer truck if you're looking for donor parts. Also, I don't know what's available out there right now as for options for turbos on the OBS trucks, I'd say most of them require a completely different setup, either a T-4 setup or a Super Duty setup. I do know that there's several options out there for the factory setups on the Super Duty trucks that didn't exist when this thread was started.
