Hello everybody. I just joined. I wanted to have some input on the 5.4. I used to own a f250 with the 7.3 psd with a 8ft hiniker c-plow. I loved it and only got rid of it because I got out of my business. I regret it still today and miss it. But I need a truck for hauling a few thing here and there and for plowing my 1/2 mile road/drive. I will reg. it just as a "farm" truck. I would love to get a psd again but I don't have the extra cash for it because it's going to be our third car. That brings me to my question. I have a chance to buy a 99 f350 Reg cab 4x4 5.4 auto with a 8' fisher for $4000. But the truck has 300000 miles on body, but 70k on engine. The body is in get shape and the plow it pretty new too. He said the only thing wrong is a small leak at the exhaust manifold. Is this smart to buy or big chance?
Any thoughts on this would be great. Thank you.
exhaust leak is prolly a broken stud as far as working it a superduty is a superduty the stinker dose more towing but plowing snow is no big deal for my 5.4
As a third vehicle, probably not a bad deal. However 70k on the motor doesn't mean 70k on the transmission or axles. I don't know this snow you speak of, but I wouldn't hesitate to pull a drag down the road (chain link fence and a few old tires) with my 5.4L. It would come down to gearing for me, drop it into 4lo and take my time, with all that gear reduction you should certainly have more torque than traction.

I hope to find out about the tranny tomorrow. Any idea on how much a rebuilt tranny would be? And I could get some used axles from a Junk yard to would think.
As for power, towing is the only prob? The only 5.4 I have drive was a navigator.
It's not that much of a problem, it's just not as easy as with the diesels. You may not hold high speeds with a heavy load. The Monster in a box rebuild I've been eye balling is something in the $4k area. You could probably get a good one for half that price though.
So from what I'm reading from you guys, is go for it and worry about the tranny and axles later on. Is the tech threads on here have any good info for me if this does need to be fixed? Thanks everyone.
yes when you have any issues everybody on here would try help you find issues.
Understand all members here are like you but have experienced that issues before then they tell to next people what to do.
Our 01 F250 V10 have 300,000 miles original transmission and axles we tow 5 wheel camper 35 foot. Engine is pretty tired now but it grow up in city with heavy traffic.
That makes me feel a bit better knowing there are some gas powered superdutys that are pushing 300k. Because I know there is a lot of psd that do it with ease. Thanks.
Ok I just talked to him he
said it is two broken studs on each side. If I bought should I trailer it home because of this? 2nd how hard on these engines are to back out the broken studs on header?
You can drive it with broken manifold studs. You will have to replace all the manifold studs as more will break when you pull the manifold. Replacing manifold studs is a pain in the *** but look on the bright side, the 5.4l has less manifold studs than the 6.8l.
