New 351w or?

I have a 65 flareside that i bought a few years back. It had a 78 351 windsor, and an auto transmission, both from a t-bird, i think.

I thought it was about to throw a rod, but when i took it in, the mechanic told me that the crankshaft is toast.
It seems like a good idea just to put in a remanuf. engine, since i don't have any real history on the old one.
Should I make life simple, and put in another 351w, or go with a "better?" engine. What are some good options? thanks.

65 what is a "better" engine than a 351 windsor?

You already have it, so you won't have to make it fit. It is a more modern engine than, the V8 that would have been available in 65.

My 2 rebuild it "like you want to"

I agree, the only "better engine" than your 351W is a 351W from years 69 to 70. With the right parts, though, yours can be just as good or better than 69/70 Windsors. Wasnt that easy!

Hopefully you can find a decent 351W that you can have rebuilt. I spent some quality time this weekend in the wrecking yard. There was one 302 engine, several 351M/400s, a bunch of 351Cs but not one 351W. The word must have gotten out about them. There weren't any Ford pickups but several vintage Ford vans. And one lone 60s picked-over Ranchero with a six cylinder. Pickings sure are getting slimmer for 1970 era vehicles.

Lee, I think you are on top of it. There have been great engines along the way, for each era that they were built in. The Windsors have proven to be good engines.

You guy's have a low rust problem out there and all of the good sheet metal is hauled out to the rust belts of the north east.

I agree with the 351W...and maybe a new block instead of a jasper engine? Good Luck, Al
