Fixed! Cruise control issue with cable

Update: Cruise control is fixed and working. See my reply for the fix.

Hi again,
Thought I'd dig around a bit while waiting for the oil to drain and see what I could find with my lack of cruise control.
I pulled apart the vacuum actuator and disconnected the cable and found that the end of the steel cable was gone, the ball that holds it in place was there but the cable is lost in the shielding.
So here are a couple questions if anyone knows the answer:
Does Ford still stock the cable?
Is the cable length specific for the diesel if I go to a salvage yard to look for one?
Could the actual steel cable be replaced?

I'm going to try pulling out the rest of the cable and see if I can find something that might work to repair. I'll let you know what I find.
Thanks again,
Eric

If you have a wreckers locally.......IIRC the Taurus is supposed to be same speed control system. Check the cable on one or get one off a truck similar..

Hey guys,
Here's an update. I haven't checked out the operation yet, but I managed to replace the cable with a trip to the local hardware store.
The actual cable is approx 1/32", but the smallest they had was 1/16". It still fit into the plastic cable housing down to the throttle lever, and with a couple crimps for the ends it's almost as good as new. It was tricky getting the crimped ends to fit on both ends of the cable.
Email me if you want a better explanation. I'll let you know if it works.
Thanks,
Eric
