I bought a 3 spd od transmission from a 53 f100 and rebuilt it for my 54. I put it in the rolling chassis a couple weeks ago. I built a new bracket off the transmission side cover to replace the one that supports the clutch linkage as the old one had an egged out hole where the shoulder bolt goes. There was no clip on the old one to hold the od control cable so I am making one while it is still easy to get at. Do any of you guys have one of these trannies? A photo of the clip mount and location would be good. I know it's a tough place to photograph. Also, the cable seems very long. Where does it route around the motor? Where does it go through the firewall? Where under the dash does the T handle mount? Again, pictues would be good. I need the mount for the T handle if some one has one for sale.
Thanks, Bob
I had one and I found it a pretty simple arrangement. You just clamp it anywhere you can along the line of the cable as close to the lever as you can get it.
Two places I used to use were bolting the retainer (which will be a clamp type exactly the same as that that holds a manual choke cable on your carburetor - but more stout) under the top bolt that holds on the solenoid, or under the top back corner bolt holding on the side (shift) casing - depending on your routing direction. Be sure to use washers on both sides of the clamp base and lock washer under the bolt head.
Adjust the cable in the clamp for the correct length and position, then trim it. Be sure you have the cable pulled out (in the lock out position) when you measure it to trim it - other wise you will cut it too short.
I mocked up a clamp and placed it in proper alignment by welding an ear on the clutch release support. The concern I have is the cable extends into the area where the shifting arms come out of the transmission and touches one. Then I tried going under the bell housing / between the cross member but alignment wasn't as good.
Regarding the length, Bill, I thought about shorting but it has a crimped mounting collar on the transmission end. Must be the new replacements come with it loose. I'll deal with that after the cab is mounted. Thank you.
You will have to use a two clamp set up then. The first one would be clamped somewhere up close to the bell housing and loop the cable upward. The second clamp - the one you fabricated will have to be taller and mounted at an angle so the cable can slightly "arc" above transmission and above the shift rods and shifters.
Also if all else fails, remove the lock out lever and install it upside down then re route the cable. That would mean you would pull out the cable to allow overdrive though rather than locking it.
