I worked underground back in the mid 70's in a hard rock mine in Park City, Utah. No certifications needed. First job I had was standing on a grizzly making little rocks out of big rocks to they would fall to the next level (100 feet) where the mine cars were.
Lots of water in that mine, dripped all the time, walking in water a lot of time. Some shafts you could stretch out both arms and touch the sides, not a whole lot of light sometimes. But it was the same temperature summer and winter

My dad was a miner for around 10 years, I've been underground twice myself (I work for an engineering company and we do a lot of business with mines in the area).
The temperature thing must depend on where you are- because if you're in an area where the fans are blowing through, if it's 20 degrees outside, it's 20 degrees in the mine!
