I worked underground back in the mid 70's in a hard rock mine in Park City, Utah. No certifications needed. First job I had was standing on a grizzly making little rocks out of big rocks to they would fall to the next level (100 feet) where the mine cars were.

Lots of water in that mine, dripped all the time, walking in water a lot of time. Some shafts you could stretch out both arms and touch the sides, not a whole lot of light sometimes. But it was the same temperature summer and winter

Yea.....water isn't the best thing......Good thing about underground mining is the temp is the same year round....Bad thing about the watery mines are that in the winter it freezes/thaws/freezes/thaws...causes roof falls....

I'm not a Miner.

To be honest, I don't think that I could ever be.

It takes a lot of courage to go into the ground (and have sitting in the back of your head), that you may never come out.

You have my respect.

My dad was a miner for around 10 years, I've been underground twice myself (I work for an engineering company and we do a lot of business with mines in the area).

The temperature thing must depend on where you are- because if you're in an area where the fans are blowing through, if it's 20 degrees outside, it's 20 degrees in the mine!
