The clutch pedal on my 73 F100 390 4spd 2wd occasionally binds up on me. It pushes hard and stops a couple inches off the floor. It will continue to do this a couple times until it pops loudly and then works correctly. The pop seems to come from under the dash, not down by the transmission.
Have any of you had this trouble? Is it a worn bushing binding up? The clutch acts good otherwise, no slipping or chattering. Any ideas?
Sounds like the throwout bearing might be binding up on the front bearing retainer on the trans. If you have to take it apart check to enure that the front bearing retainer is still straight and hasn't worn cone shaped over the years where the throwout bearing has been riding.
I have also seen this type of binding you describe resulting from a worn clutch rod. Pull the cotter/clevis pin under the dash and down underneath the truck at the z-bar. Inspect the rod and the pivot holes carefully. They might be all worn out and binding. BTW-there is supposed to be nylon bushings on each end of the rod.
