I started my tranny swap tonight and probably have about 45 min left untill the old one is out. I notice the old trans, where the fluid lines hook to it, has what looks like a bypass line going from one port to the other. On my new trans John does not have the fittings for the connection between the two ports. Does anyone know about this. They are on the right side of the trans.
Tomorrow is the day Terry, hope the install goes smooth. As for your question, Stewart_H comes to mind when asking your question, he has one. Good luck.
Thanks. I will post again tomorrow when and if I get it done. My mech only has a few hours to help and it is at his shop. Hopefully I can get ahold of John tomorrow to find out about that line.
That is a pressure bypass (think that is the correct name) is there incase the cooler has a restriction the rear of trans won't suffer from lack of oil
think I remember John don't use it,not sure why
That is a bypass incase the trans cooler or lines going to or from it get clogged. Is there just a plug in each mounting hole? I can't believe that John would expect you to reuse the old one. Call his shop, someone made a mistake by not installing a new one.
Edit : You can use the old one until you can contact him but be sure to clean it out thoroughly.
Edit 2 : Ray, I am still too wordy and you beat me too it.

That is what we suspected it to be, there are fittings there right now. Not plugs. But the fittings are not set up for the bypass line. I could take the old one off my trans and swap them over, I just was not sure what John had going on. I would not think he would delete this bypass though.

Does the JW trans have the flare fittings in the threaded ports for the flared cooler lines? I saw an article in a magazine about JW transmissions and it showed where he removed the by-pass line and brazed up the holes where the tube went. Each trans rebuilder has different ideas about lubrication and cooling. I left my by-pass line on when I rebuilt mine. If the coolers get restricted you will get a by-pass of hot oil, but will still have lube to the rear of the trans.

Right now it is a spacer where the bypass line would be and then a fitting for the fluid lines going to the cooler to hook up. I figure I will take the spacer out and put the bypass fittings in there and plumb it the way it was.
I guess John has such faith in his trannies that there will be nothing coming from the trans that could restrict the cooler. Personally I would want a bypass just in case something did.
Edit: I guess there was no mistake made if John purposely deletes the bypass.

That is my thinking also. I will call him tomorrow though.

That may be true. But I, personally, wouldn't eliminate the by-pass line.
