My wife hit a garbage can which was left on the edge of the road with her car and broke the passenger side mirror glass. It is one of those which is powered and remote. I have located one to replace it but was wondering how these things work. Does the mirror just pop or snap into place on the motor which is mounted inside the mirror housing? This looks to be the only way to attach the motor inside the housing and then replace the mirror. Thanks for any help. Have a merry Christmas to all.
If just the glass is broken, not the housing or glass cradle, the glass glues in to most of them I have seen. But you may not be able to buy just the glass at the dealer. Check eBay.
The glass is broken but the base is also broken away from the motor, It appears that it was attached with 4 plastic ball and socket attachments which allow the mirror to move and I think the ball and sockets snap together after the motor is attached to the housing
Have you taken the unit off the door? You typically do that by swinging the mirror "post"
90* just above the door panel. That will expose a couple screws that attach the base to the door. Remove the screws and take the mirror assembly off and turn it over. There should be a couple screws in the bottom of the post that hold the motor into the housing.
It would help if we knew what make and model we were talking about.
The older GM units (mid 80's through late 90's) the mirror glass could be replaced with minimal hassle. The piece the glass glues into can be removed. It snaps onto the motor pack at a central pivot and has two small "racks" (picture a small rack and pinion) or screws that engage into the motor pack. One for the side to side movement and one for the up/down movement. These racks fit into holes in the motor pack and will pull out and be able to push back in with minimal effort.
If you can clean up the piece that the glass glues into then you can order a new replacement mirror piece to glue into it.
