Trans fluid change??

Can any one explain the best way to line up the drain plug on the converter? Is it hard to turn the motor by the crankshaft pulley?
Thanks for any info!

turning engine by crankshaft bolt

Easy, did it this weekend to line up drain for the torque converter. Used socket and a breaker bar. Much easier than bumping the starter and burning that up!

Cheater/Breaker bar works the best.

The dealer told me that the 'flush machine' will get all the fluid out, even the converter.

I asked the dealer to change the filter; they recommended that I not change it. They said it would leak from then on and that a flush is all that is necessary.

to be honest repair places make a killing off flushes. they hook a machine up and walk away and work one something else. so a mechanic can turn in double the billable hours. also repair shops get spifs for flushes sold. i worked at a place that sold wynns products, and the service writer got $2 for every flush sold. now don't get me completely wrong. there are flushes that are ok and are worth doing from time to time. some trans just have a metal screen and really don't filter much to begin with. there are also so fwd cars that are lifetime filter and to change you have to split the case. i just changed my navi filter for the first time at 90,000 mi. and it really wasn't that dirty. so i might just flush the next 30k service and not drop the pan.

Thanks for the straight talk! My Expe has the 4r100, do you know if it has the metal screen of a real filter?

He's quite wrong about it leaking after changing the filter, I've replaced mine a number of times with no leaks. My pan also has the reusable gasket (factory gasket) which is much nicer than the old cork ones.

i can't speak of other filter, but motorcraft has a filter media. like i said my navi had 90,000 and had never been change. the fluid was dark and there was some debree on the magnet but wasn't too bad. you could probly get by flushing every other.

I noticed in my Navi shop manual, under "Tansmission Drian And Refill", step 23 states, "Do not remove or install a new fluid filter."

Of course, they don't give a reason for that statement.
