Backlash

How much backlash should I feel when the truck has both wheels on the ground and I turn the driveshaft by hand with the tranny in nuetral? The rear is a 9" Thanks

Every article and manual i have seen has said between .005 and .008 inches when trying to turn the pinion.

Just a thought but before you start thinking too much backlash make sure your U joints are good.

That .005-.008 backlash is actually measured at the edge of the ring gear while the carrier is out. If you are measuring the backlash at the pinion with everything installed and on the wheels on the ground and tranny in neutral, you will get a much higher reading. This is because you will be reading the slop created not only between the ring & pinion (which is very little), but also the spider gears in the differential unit and the fit of the splines on the axle shafts.

Unfortunately I have not seen any specifications of what this combined backlash should be. The next time I am under there I will check it out and see how much I have.
