Hi again, y'all, from North Carolina. I am still working on my F250 SD 4x4 to continue to make it right for my beach fishing trips. Over Thanksgiving, I helped my uncle by pulling his camper 14 miles up a sand "road" to get it off the island. My truck bounced like crazy -couldn't go more than 10mph. My uncle said "you need some air bags". So, since I am looking into buying a camper, I researched suspension solutions and found something called Timbren Aeon Springs. They are a lot cheaper than air bags, and seem simple to install. Will they do the job for me?
Timbrens are basically bump stops, and they limit the travel of the suspension so that you don't sag too much.
But for a light trailer like that, on an F250 Superduty, you should not need anything to handle the tongue weight. My F250 handles the tongue weight on a 5,500# trailer with just the stock suspension, and it doesn't even contact the overload springs except on bumps.
Even if you did need an assist, a weight distributing hitch is the proper way to handle it on a pull-behind trailer. Forget Timbrens or air bags, you don't need them for that application.
Bill, please understand that this is not for road travel...I am in need of stabilization on a pull down an unpaved road in sand. Info I forgot to include: When I do this trip, I have the back of the truck loaded with coolers, fishing gear, etc., so that the truck itself is fully loaded. The camper, with water and all the other stuff in it, will exceed 5,000#. I am not concerned as much about running down paved roads, my truck will handle that beautifully. It is just that on the pull I mentioned in the initial post, the truck bounced uncontrollably.
Thanks for your responses.
Gotcha. So you are convinced that the bouncing is due to the total load you were carrying. You are probably right, because a person can tell by the type of bouncing if that is the case.
I still don't think Timbens are what you want. But air bags might be a good solution for you. Weight distributing hitches are NOT good for rough roads, so the air bags would eliminate any need for a WD hitch, while also carrying the load in the bed nicely.
